Letter: Cheerleading is a sport - Twin Falls Times-News

For many years there has been an argument over whether cheerleading is a sport. Many people consider cheerleading to be an “activity” and not a sport. Not many people understand the struggle of what cheerleaders go through. Cheerleading isn't just about looking good while chanting to a crowd. Cheerleaders work every day to perfect their routines for competition and sometimes it doesn’t go very well. Cheerleading is an all-year sport, unlike football or basketball. Cheerleaders dedicate themselves to working hard and perfecting themselves, just like basketball or football players do. Some cheerleaders take up tumbling, gymnastics and weightlifting just so they can improve themselves in cheerleading and become better backspots, bases, flyers and tumblers. Cheerleaders also go through injuries that could ruin their cheer career forever and the team could risk having to change their entire routine weeks before competition.

Cheerleaders compete in competitions just like football and basketball players. They are judged on how well they perform. They memorize and practice different routines and different motions, just like football and basketball players. When a player in football or basketball gets hurt or needs a break during a game, they can take a time out. Cheerleaders don’t get a timeout if they mess up or get hurt. They fight through it all and continue to perform until their routine is finished. Cheerleaders work just as hard as football and basketball players do. Cheerleaders are athletes, just like football and basketball players.
