Ohio Politics Now: Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton returning to Ohio after debate - Columbus Dispatch

[ad_1]

Want to know what’s happening in Ohio government and politics from Columbus to Washington,
D.C.? The Columbus Dispatch has you covered.

Both Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and GOP candidate Donald Trump have
scheduled visits to Ohio for later this week.

The
Clinton campaign announced Tuesday afternoon
that she will be in Cleveland on Friday. Time and
place TBD.

Meanwhile,
the
Trump campaign announced Tuesday night
that he will have a 12:30 p.m. rally on Thursday at the
Delaware County Fairgrounds.

Happening today: Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine will be in Upper Arlington this
morning before heading west for a rally in Springfield.

Oh yeah: The third and final debate between Clinton and Trump is 9 p.m. today. You
can catch it on major networks and cable news channels.

What will turnout look like?
Dispatch Washington reporters Jessica Wehrman and Jana Heigl write:

As Nov. 8 approaches, election experts find themselves asking a surreal question during a
very surreal political season: How much is hatred a motivator for voter turnout?

They paint two wildly different scenarios: Voters, repelled by two candidates who have the
highest unfavorable ratings in recent history, will stay home, or, if they vote, skip the top of
the ticket and vote on down-ballot races instead.

Or, lured by the soap opera that the 2016 presidential election has become, voters will show
up in droves to choose between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.

A different Trump in Ohio: Eric Trump stopped at the University of Toledo to stump
for his dad on Tuesday.

“Asked about recent complaints from his father that the election is ‘rigged,’ Mr. Trump said
he accepted Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted’s assurances Monday that the election will be fair
and honest,”

Toledo Blade reporter Tom Troy writes.

“He said his concerns about a ‘rigged’ election have more to do with media bias influencing
the election results than direct tampering.”

Speaking of rigged election talk: “President Barack Obama on Tuesday tore into
Donald Trump for sowing suspicion about the integrity of the U.S. election, telling the Republican
presidential nominee to ‘stop whining’ and focus on winning votes,”
Associated Press reporters Kevin Freking and Kathleen Hennessy write.

“Obama called Trump's intensifying, pre-emptive warnings about voter fraud ‘unprecedented’ in
modern politics. The rhetoric is not based on any evidence, Obama said, but is simply aimed at
discrediting the election before the first votes are counted.”

New poll in the Senate race: “A new poll has Republican Sen. Rob Portman with a
commanding 13-point point lead over Democratic challenger Ted Strickland in a race once expected to
be among the closest in the country,”
Dispatch Washington bureau chief Jack Torry writes.

“The poll, conducted by Quinnipiac University, shows Portman has the firm support of 95
percent of Republicans in the state even though the Ohio Republican party is deeply divided because
of the controversial campaign of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.”

Not an option:

This story from Cincinnati Enquirer’s Jessie Balmert is a good reminder
that you can’t vote by phone. A person in southern Ohio said someone claiming to be from the
Trump campaign called and offered that as an option. It’s not.

Presidential candidate John McCain holds a rally in Westerville.”
