Letter: Nonprofits can't play politics - The Columbian
The Oct. 14 story by The Washington Post, “Humane Society opposes Trump,” is a violation of IRS tax rules on nonprofits. The IRS website shows that a not-for-profit cannot engage in political activities unless it is for educational purposes only. The story, published in The Columbian, is clearly taking a political position which is in violation of the IRS ruling as shown on the IRS website. I doubt that any IRS agent or interested journalist will take note.
I don’t care who you support, it is not important. What is important is that a nonprofit is taking advantage of its privilege by taking a political position. I will never contribute to this organization other than at the local level, where I can be assured no money flows to this national group. While it’s expected that the IRS might review its position, it will not happen. It’s way too political for the IRS to take on.
