Queen honours MPs Tobias Ellwood and Ben Wallace after response to Westminster attacks - City A.M.

The Queen has honoured two members of Parliament who were directly involved in the response to Wednesday’s attack in Westminster.

Tobias Ellwood and Ben Wallace were made members of the Privy Council late on Friday.

Ellwood tried to resuscitate the police officer stabbed by the attacker, while Wallace was involved in the government’s response.

Wallace, a security minister at the Home Office, serves as Conservative MP for Wyre and Preston North. Ellwood, a counterterrorism minister and former army officer, serves as Conservative MP for Bournemouth East.

The attacker killed four people, including PC Keith Palmer, who was guarding the Houses of Parliament. Parliament closed for the rest of the day as police procedures swung into action, but resumed on Thursday.

The MPs will now be addressed at "Right Honourable" in Parliament, joining other senior politicians who are appointed to the institution.

The Privy Council was introduced in the earliest days of the monarchy familiar today. While members formerly held an important role as key advisors to the ruling monarch, today the post is largely ceremonial.

Members are appointed by the Queen for the rest of their lifetime on the advice of the Prime Minister.

In a short statement Downing Street said: “The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Tobias Ellwood MP and Ben Wallace MP as members of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council.”
