There are worse 4-sport cities than Detroit right now - Detroit Free Press
Earlier this week, we wrote about how Detroit is in its longest championship drought in a few decades.
Alas.
But how do our teams collectively measure up against other four-sport markets right now? After all, championships aren't the only barometer of success. It's better to have a contender than a cellar dweller, right?
There are a lot of ways you could try to measure this question. We chose to see where each team ranks in its respective conference, then average all of the teams for each city. This is how it stands today, taking into account the 2016 MLB season, the 2016 NFL regular season and the NBA and NHL seasons, to date.
• Boston: 3.25
• Washington, D.C.: 5
• San Francisco Bay Area: 6.75
• Chicago: 7.2
• Dallas: 7.25
• Los Angeles: 8
• Miami: 8.625
• Detroit: 9.25
• New York: 9.4375
• Minneapolis/St. Paul: 9.75
• Denver: 10.125
• Philadelphia: 10.625
• Phoenix: 12.25
This chart isn't perfect, of course, but it gives you an idea. Boston sports are good. Phoenix sports are bad. And Detroit could be worse, given that our two winter teams are in last place in their respective divisions.
Chicago and Dallas are interesting in that they have really good (Cubs, Blackhawks, Cowboys, Rangers) mixed with really bad (White Sox, Bears, Stars, Mavericks). Is that better than, say, Miami, which is just kind of "meh" at everything?
Discuss amongst yourselves.
